India’s growing electronics sector

  • by

India’s growing electronics sector is maturing. Several recent news stories show that India is becoming a major force in electronic manufacturing.

Electronics Weekly reports that Tata is to invest $10.9 billion in a new fab in India. They will work in partnership with Powerchip Semiconductor. Around the same time, Tata and ADI signed a MoU to explore semiconductor manufacturing in India

Apple has now moved the manufacture of the latest iPhones away from China to India, almost certainly because of fears that tariffs and a trade war between the US and China would hurt their business.

And we read that Lenovo is to manufacture servers in India for local use and export.

India’s government backs the growing electronics sector

Underlying these developments is the strong support that Mr Narendra Modi’s government is offering to electronics manufacturers. The Indian government has a clear strategy to become a bigger player in the fast growing electronics industry. They have set policies to promote the manufacture of mobile phones, electronics components and semiconductors, and to enable the supporting infrastructure for these industries within the country. At the moment Bengaluru and New Delhi are the two main centres of India’s technology sector.

Mr Modi’s government projects that the Indian electronics sector could double in size, at least, in the next 5 years. Why not? India has the educated workforce, low operating costs and is attracting investment from multinational companies. Also, English is widely spoken and understood, making India a relatively easy country in which to do business. India also has a lively start-ups sector.

India’s electronics sector matures

As India’s technology industry grows and the market matures, its selection of trade shows will expand too, to rival the shows in UK and Europe. India already has a busy programme of conferences and exhibitions for the electronics industry. Here are a few: Indian Electronics Expo, Elecxpo, Elecrama, Electro Asia Expo and the IIAREE, the India Industrial Automation Robotics and Electronics Expo.

The country’s trade media and magazine sector is expanding too, with a growing list of professional publications and digital news sites to serve India’s blossoming electronics design and manufacturing industry.
